Q. How often should I get the exterior of my house repainted?
A. The average is between 7 and 10 years, depending on the quality of the previous paint job, nature of your siding, and your exposure to weather.
Q. My house isn't very old- just 6 or 7 years, and it has Hardi-plank for the siding. I notice a lot of gaps between the siding where the caulking has cracked out. Was there a problem with the installation of this product?
A. No. It is normal for the siding to continue to shrink a bit after the initial install. When it is re-caulked and painted those cracks will not re-appear.
Q. What are the standard steps for the prep before you paint the outside of my house?
A. We treat your gutters and mold/mildew area with 30 second clean (or similar) product and pressure wash the siding and gutters. We caulk needed areas on lap siding, around window/door trim, and where nail heads may have penetrated the siding. Loose areas of paint are scraped and bare wood is spot primed.
Q. How long should my new paint job last?
A. Depending on the condition and type of your siding, at least 7 years. If you have newer siding and quality prep a 12-14 years job should be expected.
Q. Why do the higher quality paints have a 25 or 30 year warranty on them?
A. I have no idea.
Q. I have extensive landscaping, sidewalk, and porches. How do you protect those?
A. Porches and driveways, sidewalk, etc. have drop cloths placed on them. Plants get lightweight coverings that will not break the branches or stalked or cause the temperature to build up.
Q. I have an older house and there may be lead in my paint. How do you test for that and what do you do if you find it?
A. There is a simple testing kit that will generate a color change if lead is present. The basic steps for lead safety are proper protection, containment, and disposal. TOPCO has training and a certificate as certified lead abators and can walk you through the steps specific to your project.
Q. How long will it take to paint my house?
A. It will vary depending on size and complexity. A 'standard' paint job usually takes 1 day to pressure wash, 1 day to prep and mask, and 2-3 days to spray and trim.
